How do I perform a RedPed reset?

The e-bike must generally be switched on during the reset process. There are two different types of reset plugs depending on the module:

Important note: After a successful reset, the PIN is generally reset to 000000 and the module becomes visible again in the app (if it was previously invisible).
RedPed 3:

You must plug in a reset switch and press it at least 10 times within 10 seconds at intervals of 0.5 to 1.0 seconds. It is best to keep pressing continuously until 1 km is displayed as the odometer reading on the e-bike display or the module is found in the app. Alternatively, a Phillips screwdriver can be used instead of the reset switch.

Plug in the included reset cable and wait at least 20 seconds.

Attention: Do not forget to unplug the reset cable after the procedure! Otherwise, the module will reset itself every 20 seconds repeatedly.

Which error codes does the Bosch system show when tuning is detected?

If the Bosch system detects tampering, the motor noticeably reduces power (limp mode). This is usually indicated on the display by the following error codes, depending on the system:

Bosch Smart System BES3:
  • 524001
  • 525001
  • 525002
  • 525003
  • 525004
Bosch Non-Smart System BES2:
  • 504
How do I disable the Bosch limp mode again?

The procedure depends on how many times the tuning has already been detected:

  • After the 1st and 2nd detection (Temporary Limp Mode): You must ride the e-bike for more than 90 minutes in its original condition without detected tampering. Simply turning it off and on again is not sufficient! The full 90 minutes of riding time must be completed.
  • After the 3rd detection (permanent limp mode): Unfortunately, the 90-minute ride is no longer sufficient. Limp mode is permanently activated and can only be reset by an authorized Bosch dealer using the Bosch DiagnosticTool 3.
How do I avoid tuning detection on Bosch motors?

To avoid limp mode and an expensive visit to the dealer, we recommend a clear limit for the RedPed app: limit the speed to a maximum of 33.0 km/h!

Although technically much higher speeds are possible, the risk of permanent tuning detection increases massively if values above 33.0 km/h are set. Any setting beyond this is at your own risk.

What does error W292 mean on Shimano EP6 and EP801?

The EP6 and EP801 motors have integrated tuning detection. The error code W292 (accompanied by an acoustic signal) is the first warning level during the ride.

However, this error can also occur if no signal is received from the speed sensor and the speed remains at 0 km/h when starting off. In this case, there may be a problem with the magnet or the tuning chip is defective.

What happens with Shimano errors E295 and E299?

If you ignore the initial error W292, the error code E295, which appears up to four times. On the fifth occurrence, the error E299 displayed.

As soon as E299 occurs, a visit to a Shimano workshop is unavoidable. The motor must be removed and sent to the Shimano distributor Paul Lange. The cost for unlocking there is €119 plus VAT, plus the workshop costs for installation and removal.
