Dear Customer,
The purchase of tuning chips is legal. But beware: the use of a tuned e-bike on public roads is strictly prohibited and has serious consequences!
Tuning legally reclassifies your e-bike as a motor vehicle. This means:
- Illegal on Public Roads: Your e-bike's operating license immediately expires. You are operating an unregistered vehicle.
- Driving Without Insurance Coverage (Criminal Offense!): Your normal e-bike insurance (including private liability) NO LONGER applies. Driving without mandatory insurance can be punished with a fine or imprisonment (§ 6 PflichtVG).
- Driving Without a License (Criminal Offense!): Depending on the speed, you will need a moped or motorcycle license. Driving without one can also be punished with a fine or imprisonment (§ 21 StVG).
- Loss of Warranty & Guarantee for Your E-Bike: Manufacturer's warranty and statutory guarantee for your e-bike typically expire for all parts affected by the tuning. You will bear repair costs yourself.
- Further Risks: High fines, points on your driving record, impoundment of the e-bike. In the event of accidents, you are fully privately liable for all damages, as there is no insurance coverage. This can lead to financially ruinous costs.
Permitted Use?
Yes, but exclusively on completely private property (e.g., enclosed company premises, private race tracks) and only with the owner's consent. Not on public roads, bike paths, or dirt roads!
