Purchasing tuning chips is legal. But beware: Using a tuned e-bike on public roads is strictly prohibited and has serious consequences!
Tuning legally classifies your e-bike as a motor vehicle. This means:
- Illegal on public roads: Your e-bike’s operating permit is immediately void. You are riding an unregistered vehicle.
- Riding without insurance coverage (criminal offense!): Your regular e-bike insurance (including private liability) no longer applies. Riding without mandatory insurance can be punished with fines or imprisonment (§ 6 PflichtVG).
- Riding without a license (criminal offense!): Depending on the speed, you need a moped or motorcycle license. Riding without one can also be punished with fines or imprisonment (§ 21 StVG).
- Loss of warranty and guarantee for your e-bike: Manufacturer warranty and statutory guarantee usually expire for all parts affected by tuning. You bear the repair costs yourself.
- Additional risks: High fines, penalty points, and impoundment of the e-bike. In case of accidents, you are fully liable privately for all damages, as no insurance coverage exists. This can lead to financially devastating costs.
Is use allowed?
Yes, but exclusively on completely private property (e.g., secured company premises, private racetracks) and only with the owner’s consent. Not on public roads, bike paths, or field paths!
