Shimano EP8: remove the cover and install RedPed 2s

How to install RedPed 2s on a Shimano EP8: remove the cover, connect the Speedsensor and Di2, secure the cable lug to the positive lighting terminal and stow the module without pressure.

Preparation and tools

This illustrated guide combines the two videos showing EP8 cover removal and installation of RedPed 2s for Shimano EP8 (DU-EP800). Use the matching EP8 module; versions for E8000, EP6 and EP801 are different.

  • Suitable Phillips screwdriver or bit for the three motor cover screws
  • Suitable Shimano connector tool for the fitted connectors
  • Suitable Phillips screwdriver for the lighting terminal
  • Side cutters and a new cable tie if needed
  • Protective gloves and safety glasses when removing and fitting the motor cover
  • Suitable RedPed 2s and smartphone with the RedPed app

Before working on the connections: Switch off the e-bike and remove the battery. Read the complete module manual, including safety information and requirements for use and installation, and follow the bicycle manufacturer's instructions. Connector positions, cable routing and available space may differ from the bicycle shown.

Which connections are used?

The RedPed module has a Speed socket and a Display socket. The e-bike's Speedsensor plug connects to the Speed socket. The Display socket is only needed if both Di2 ports on the motor are occupied: the round Di2 plug from the e-bike display then connects to the RedPed's Display socket. If a motor Di2 port is free, plug the RedPed's Di2 plug directly into it; the module's Display socket remains unused and sealed with its blanking plug.

Identify the cables by their function and connector shape. Their position in the photo alone is not sufficient. Distinguish the sockets on the RedPed module from the ports on the motor.

Step-by-step installation

1. Remove the motor cover

Switch off the e-bike, remove the battery and support the bicycle securely. Undo the three motor cover screws with a correctly fitting Phillips screwdriver or bit. The video does not specify the bit size. Remove the cover carefully; the crank remains fitted on the bicycle shown. Access may vary by frame.

2. Identify the motor connections and Speedsensor

In the opening video's viewing direction, the three lower connections are: display on the left, a free Di2 port with a blanking plug in the middle, and Speedsensor on the right. Above them are the lighting terminals, positive right and negative left. These positions apply to the example shown. Check connection type and markings on your bicycle.

The EP8 round Di2 plugs are smaller than E8000 plugs. The original Speedsensor plug has two locating tabs. The installation video first shows a different demonstration plug, then separately shows the original plug. Use the original plug and matching socket as your reference. Use a suitable Shimano connector tool and do not pull on cables. Do not test-fit a display plug in the Speedsensor socket.

3. Insert RedPed into the Speedsensor cable

Unplug the original Speedsensor plug from the motor's Speedsensor socket. Insert the matching RedPed Speedsensor plug into that motor socket. Then connect the original plug you removed to the RedPed Speed socket.

The module is now connected between the Speedsensor and motor. Observe the locating tab and correct orientation. Insert the connectors fully until they click into place. Do not force them.

4. Connect the Display/Di2 connection

RedPed needs one motor Di2 port. In this video the centre port is free and sealed with a blanking plug.

If both ports are occupied: Unplug the round Di2 plug from the e-bike display from the motor and insert it into the RedPed module's Display socket. Then insert the RedPed Di2 plug into the freed motor port. The shifting cable can stay in place.

If a Di2 port is already free: Remove its blanking plug if fitted. Insert the RedPed Di2 plug directly into that free port. The display cable stays connected to the motor. The unused Display socket on the module stays sealed with its designated blanking plug.

The installation video shows that either Di2 port can be used for the module. Identify the connection type rather than relying on descriptions such as “top” or “bottom”.

5. Secure the cable lug to lighting positive

Secure the RedPed cable lug to the positive screw terminal of the lighting connection and tighten the screw using a suitable Phillips screwdriver. In the view shown, positive is on the right and negative on the left. Always check the terminal marking; this viewing direction is not a universal position reference for every bicycle.

The installation video specifies connecting the lug to positive even if the lighting output is not enabled. Do not confuse it with the negative terminal. Keep the e-bike switched off and the battery removed while working.

6. Leave the reset plug disconnected

The additional two-pin RedPed reset plug remains disconnected during normal installation. The video explicitly identifies it as the module reset connection. Do not connect it to the lighting output or any other motor connection.

7. Initialise and check operation

Check the connections and secure loose cables away from moving parts. Insert the battery for the functional check and switch on the e-bike. Open the appropriate RedPed app, select the module and check that all module data loads.

The video gives 000000 as the unchanged factory PIN. If you have changed it, use your own PIN. The pairing dialogue may differ depending on the app version and operating system.

With the bicycle securely supported, turn the wheel fitted with the Speedsensor. Check for a speed signal on the e-bike display and in the app. Keep hands and tools clear of the drivetrain. This checks the signal; with tuning active, the app and e-bike display readings do not have to be identical.

Also enter the e-bike's current odometer reading in the app. Switch off the e-bike immediately after initialisation and remove the battery before stowing the module or correcting connections.

Connect the module in the RedPed app and turn the wheel to check the speed signal.

8. Stow the module and connectors

Place the module in protected space where water cannot accumulate. In the video it is next to the battery connector, with extra connectors in the space above. This is an example for the frame shown.

Route cables without kinks, tension, pinching or chafing. Keep them away from the crank, chainring and other moving parts. If needed, secure the routing with a suitable new cable tie without constricting the cables.

Example placement: module and connectors in the available space beside the motor.

9. Fit the cover without pressure and secure it

Test-fit the cover first. It must fit without pressing on the module, cables or connectors. Do not use the cover to push parts into the space or use the screws to pull an ill-fitting cover into position.

If the cover does not sit correctly, remove it and adjust the placement. Then secure it with the original screws following the manufacturer's instructions. The videos do not specify tightening torques. Once assembly is complete, insert the battery and check operation again.

Installation FAQ

Do I need to remove the crank?

Not on the EP8 bicycle shown: the side cover can be removed after undoing its three screws. Check your frame and cover design.

What if both Di2 ports are occupied?

Unplug the round Di2 plug from the e-bike display from the motor and insert it into the RedPed module's Display socket. Insert the module's Di2 plug into the freed motor port. This keeps the display connected.

What happens to the module's Display socket if a Di2 port is free?

Insert the RedPed module's Di2 plug directly into the free motor Di2 port. The display cable stays connected to the motor; the module's Display socket is not needed. Keep the unused RedPed Display socket sealed with its blanking plug.

Must the cable lug be connected even if the lighting is disabled?

Yes. The installation video explicitly shows and explains that the cable lug must still connect to the positive lighting terminal.

Which plug stays disconnected?

The additional two-pin reset plug remains disconnected during normal installation. It is not intended for connection to the motor or lighting.

Does this guide apply to E8000, EP6 or EP801?

No. It shows RedPed 2s for Shimano EP8 (DU-EP800). E8000, EP6 and EP801 require their matching modules and instructions. Do not transfer plug shapes or positions to other motors without checking.
