Yamaha PW-S2: removing the cover and installing RedPed 3
This guide takes you from removing the crank and motor cover to connecting and positioning the RedPed 3 module. The module is connected in line with the display and speed sensor cables.
Preparation and tools
Both source videos show a Yamaha PW-S2. Use the appropriate RedPed 3 for Yamaha PW-X3 / PW-S2 / PW-XM. The removal steps described here apply to the bicycle shown; the cover, screw access and installation space may differ on other bicycles.
- 8 mm Allen key for the crank bolt shown in the video
- Suitable crank puller with the appropriate pressure piece or integrated tip
- Suitable spanner for the crank puller, depending on the tool model
- 3 mm Allen key and, if needed, a short 3 mm hex bit for the cover screws
- Appropriate RedPed 3 module and smartphone with the RedPed app
Before removal: switch off the e-bike, remove the battery and support the bicycle securely. Follow the complete RedPed manual and the bicycle and crank manufacturers’ fitting instructions. The videos do not specify tightening torques; use the respective manufacturers’ specifications.
Which connections are used?
From the viewing direction in the image below, the connectors on the PW-S2 shown are arranged from top to bottom as follows. The positions refer to this installation example. Also check the connector shape, number of pins and associated cable.
| Position in the image | Connection | During RedPed installation |
|---|---|---|
| At the top | Speed sensor, 3-pin | Connect RedPed in line with this cable |
| Second from the top | Blanking plug | Leave in the motor |
| Second from the bottom | Display, 6-pin | Connect RedPed in line with this cable |
| At the bottom | Light, 2-pin; white in the image | Do not confuse with the unused 2-pin RedPed connector |

Important: the 2-pin connector on the RedPed module remains unused in the installation shown. The bicycle’s 2-pin light plug is a different connector and still belongs in the motor’s light socket.
Step-by-step installation
-
1. Loosen the crank bolt
With the e-bike switched off and the battery removed, loosen the crank bolt anticlockwise using the 8 mm Allen key. Remove the bolt. The crank still sits on the spindle and will be removed with a suitable puller in the next step.

Loosen the crank bolt using the 8 mm Allen key. -
2. Remove the crank with the puller
The video uses a Shimano crank puller with a separate pressure piece. For this tool type, insert the appropriate piece into the opening. A puller with an integrated pressure tip does not require a separate piece.
Screw the puller straight and fully into the crank’s extractor thread before operating the pressure spindle. Then turn the pressure spindle in with the appropriate spanner until the crank releases from the spindle. Remove the crank. Use a puller suitable for your crank and spindle.

Insert the separate pressure piece of the crank puller used in the video.
The puller is fitted to the crank. Before pulling, its outer thread must be screwed in straight and completely. -
3. Loosen the three cover screws
The first video switches to a view of the underside of the bicycle for this step. Keep the bicycle secure when repositioning it and protect delicate components.
- Loosen the cover screw shown at the far right in this video view using the 3 mm Allen key.
- Loosen the middle screw behind the chainring. In the video, it stays in the cover after being loosened.
- Loosen the left screw. The video uses a short 3 mm hex bit for the restricted access.
“Right”, “middle” and “left” refer to the underside view in the video. Check that all cover fixings on your bicycle have been released.

First cover screw: on the right in the underside view of the video.
Middle cover screw: access behind the chainring through the opening shown.
Left cover screw: restricted access with the 3 mm Allen key. -
4. Remove the cover and identify the cables
Carefully remove the loosened cover. Do not pull on the cables underneath. The connector block is now accessible.
Identify the 6-pin display plug and 3-pin speed sensor plug using the overview above. Leave the blanking plug in the motor.
The first video also demonstrates removing the white light plug: press the latch and pull out the plug. RedPed is connected in line with the display and sensor cables, however. If you removed the light plug, fully reconnect it to its original motor socket.

After releasing all fixings, carefully remove the cover. -
5. Disconnect the original display and sensor plugs
First unplug the display connector, second from the bottom in the view shown. Then unplug the speed sensor connector at the top. Release each connector’s latch, hold its housing and do not pull on the cable.
-
6. Insert the RedPed plugs into the motor sockets
Insert the 6-pin plug of the RedPed module into the motor’s display socket from which you removed the original display plug.
Then insert the 3-pin RedPed plug into the motor’s sensor socket from which you removed the original speed sensor plug. Ensure correct orientation and that each plug is fully inserted and securely seated.
-
7. Connect the original cables to the module
Connect the e-bike’s original display plug to the matching 6-pin connector on RedPed. Connect the original speed sensor plug to the 3-pin connector on RedPed.
The module is now connected in line with both cables. The remaining 2-pin RedPed connector stays unused. Do not connect it to the bicycle’s light plug.

The original display cable connects to the module’s matching 6-pin connector. The 3-pin sensor cable follows.
Connect the original 3-pin sensor plug to the matching connector on RedPed. -
8. Position the module and cables high up
Place RedPed in the available upper installation space. Arrange the connectors and cables so they are protected and the cover will fit afterwards.
Do not place the module at the bottom of the motor cover. Water can collect there and damage the module. In the video, the module sits above the motor; the black connectors and cables are also positioned in the upper area.
Avoid kinks, pinching and chafing points. Keep cables and connectors away from the crank, chainring and other moving parts. The exact placement depends on the bicycle.

Final arrangement before closing: RedPed in the upper installation space, with cables and connectors also positioned high up. -
9. Refit the cover and crank
First test-fit the cover. It must fit without pressing on the module, connectors or cables. If it does not sit correctly, remove it and adjust the cable routing.
Secure the cover with the screws removed earlier. Fit the crank according to the crank and bicycle manufacturers’ instructions and tighten the fixing to the specified torque. The second video checks the cover fit; final tightening and crank fitting are mentioned but not shown.

Test-fit the cover and check that the cables underneath have enough space. -
10. Check operation
Once assembly is complete, insert the battery and switch on the e-bike. Check the connection in the appropriate RedPed app and confirm that the module data loads.
With the bicycle securely supported, turn the wheel fitted with the speed sensor and check for a speed signal. Keep hands and tools away from the drivetrain. Also check the lights, especially if the light plug was disconnected earlier.
If a connection is missing, switch off the e-bike and remove the battery before checking the connectors again. This functional check supplements the assembly steps shown in the videos.
Frequently asked installation questions
Does the crank have to be removed?
On the bicycle shown, the crank is pulled off to allow the motor cover to be removed. Whether your bicycle requires the same removal procedure depends on its cover and frame design.
Which connector remains unused?
The RedPed module’s 2-pin connector is left disconnected in the installation shown. The motor’s blanking plug stays in place. Any disconnected light plug is reconnected to its original light socket on the motor.
Where can the module be placed?
In a suitable upper installation space, as shown in the second video. Do not place it at the bottom of the motor cover, where water can collect. Route the cables without pinching them.
Does this guide apply unchanged to PW-X3 or PW-XM?
According to the product description, the linked RedPed model also supports PW-X3 and PW-XM. However, this illustrated removal and installation procedure shows the PW-S2. Do not assume the screw positions, connector positions and installation space are identical on another bicycle.
