Installing RedPed for Bosch Smart System BES3 Gen4

The RedPed module connects between the motor and speed sensor, and between the motor and display cable. This guide explains the connector assignments, protected positioning inside the frame and the subsequent checks using the RedPed app.

Before installation

This guide applies to RedPed for Bosch Smart System BES3 Gen4 on compatible e-bikes with a spoke magnet or brake disc magnet.

Not suitable for Bosch Gen5, rim or valve magnets, or e-bikes with ABS. Any installed Bosch ConnectModule must be removed before use. Check your system using the compatibility overview or the motor finder on the homepage.

You will need: the correct RedPed module, the supplied cable ties, tools for your motor cover and a smartphone with the appropriate RedPed app. The bicycle example in the PDF manual uses a 4 mm Allen key; your bicycle may require different tools.

Before working on connectors or the cover: switch off the e-bike and remove the battery. Support the bicycle securely and follow the full safety and installation instructions in the PDF manual. The frame, cover and available installation space vary between bicycles.

Which connectors go together?

You can identify the original Bosch plugs and their corresponding motor sockets by their colours:

  • Black Bosch plug = display plug: it belongs in the black-and-white motor socket.
  • Grey Bosch plug = speed sensor plug: it belongs in the grey-and-green motor socket.

Important: the socket layout may vary depending on the motor. The images and video show an example on the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen4 pictured. On other motors, the sockets may be in different positions. Use the colours and markings to identify them, rather than their position in the image.

The RedPed connections are labelled Display and Speed. During installation, the appropriate RedPed plug replaces each original Bosch plug at the motor socket. The original Bosch plug is then connected to the corresponding socket on the RedPed module.

Example on the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen4 shown: in this image, the grey-and-green speed socket is on the left, with the black-and-white display socket to its right. Other motors may have a different layout. The connector colours and markings are what matter.

Step-by-step installation

  1. 1. Remove the motor cover

Switch off the e-bike, remove the battery and secure the bicycle against tipping over. Release the fixings for the lower motor cover, also called the skid plate, and remove it. It has already been removed at the start of the video.

  2. 2. Disconnect the original Display and Speed plugs

First unplug the original black Bosch display plug from the black-and-white motor socket, then the grey Bosch speed sensor plug from the grey-and-green motor socket. These sockets may be positioned differently from the image. Hold the plugs and avoid pulling on the cables. Note which connection is which.

  3. 3. Connect the RedPed plugs to the motor

Insert the RedPed plug labelled Display into the black-and-white display socket on the motor from which you removed the black Bosch plug. Align the arrow on the plug with the white mark on the socket and push it fully home.

Next, insert the RedPed plug labelled Speed into the grey-and-green speed socket on the motor from which you removed the grey Bosch plug. Align the plug using the guide and markings on the socket. The position and orientation shown in the video are examples for this motor and may differ on other motors. Make sure the plug is fully inserted.

  4. 4. Connect the original e-bike plugs to RedPed

Connect the previously removed black Bosch display plug to the display socket on the RedPed module. The arrow and white mark must line up.

Connect the original grey Bosch speed sensor plug to the speed socket on the module. Align the guide or raised feature on the plug with the marking, and push the connection fully together until it clicks into place. Leave the reset connector disconnected.

RedPed is now connected in line with both cables. Final securing follows in the next step.
  5. 5. Secure the module and connections in a protected position

Place RedPed as high as possible in the available frame space above the motor. Secure the cables and module connections with the supplied cable ties so they stay firmly in place.

Do not place the module or either of its two plug connections at the bottom of the motor cover. Water can collect there. Route the cables without pinching or chafing points and keep them away from moving parts. The exact position depends on the frame.

Completed cable routing: RedPed high inside the frame, module connections secured high up and outside the lower motor cover.
In the video, the module sits high inside the frame. The cables and connections are secured high up before the cover is refitted.
  6. 6. Connect the app and check operation

For the functional check, insert the battery and switch on the e-bike. Keep hands and tools away from the moving drivetrain.

    1. Open the appropriate RedPed app and select the detected module.
    2. For initial pairing, enter the default PIN 000000 — six zeros. If the PIN has already been changed, use the current PIN.
    3. Wait until the speedometer and module data have fully loaded.
    4. Turn the wheel fitted with the speed sensor and check that a speed signal appears in the app and on the e-bike display.
    5. Enter the e-bike’s existing total mileage in the corresponding app setting, as described in the PDF manual.

Note about the video: it shows an older Android app. Find the current Android and iPhone downloads on our app page.

  7. 7. Refit the motor cover

After the check, switch off the e-bike again and remove the battery. Check that the module, connectors and cables are secure and that the cover fits without pressing on the cables.

Refit the motor cover and secure it according to the bicycle manufacturer’s instructions. Then reinstall the battery.

Frequently asked installation questions

Where can I position the RedPed module?

In a suitable space inside the frame, as high as possible above the motor. The module and its plug connections must not sit at the bottom of the motor cover, where water can collect.

How can I tell whether the connections are working?

The app must connect to the module and load the data completely. Also check the speed signal by turning the wheel fitted with the speed sensor. A loaded app speedometer alone does not replace this check.

Why does the e-bike display show a different speed from the app?

With RedPed for Bosch Smart System, when tuning is active the e-bike display may show a divided speed or use the optional decimal display mode. This alone does not indicate a connection fault. The RedPed app shows the actual speed. We explain the display modes in the speed display FAQ.

What should I do if the connection or speed signal is missing?

Switch off the e-bike and remove the battery before checking the wiring. Check the Display and Speed assignments and make sure all four plug connections are fully seated. Also check that you are using the correct app. Further guidance is available in the full PDF manual.
